The parade is free to watch and free for community groups to walk in. Sponsors are the reason both of those things are true.

What your money actually pays for

Nobody at the parade takes a salary. Every dollar goes into the night itself.

Road closures and traffic control — seven streets, paid detail, from 3:00 p.m. until an hour after the last entry.
Insurance — the single largest line, and non-negotiable.
The fireworks — the reason people arrive an hour early.
High-visibility gear and radios for 60 marshals.
Marshalling supplies — entry placards, barricades, hot chocolate at 4:30 p.m.
The awards evening — where the float that spent six weekends in somebody's garage gets a trophy.
